What is GPA?

GPA is a summary of your academic performance across multiple modules or subjects. In simple terms, it combines your grades into a single overall figure. Different institutions may use different GPA scales, but the general idea is the same: to show average performance clearly.

Basic GPA calculation method

A simple GPA or weighted average is usually calculated by multiplying each module grade by its credit value, adding all those weighted results together, and then dividing by the total credits.

GPA / Weighted Average = Total of (Grade × Credits) ÷ Total Credits

Example of how to calculate GPA

Suppose a student has these module results:

Module 1: Grade 70, Credits 20 Module 2: Grade 65, Credits 20 Module 3: Grade 80, Credits 10

Step-by-step:

70 × 20 = 1400 65 × 20 = 1300 80 × 10 = 800 Total weighted score = 1400 + 1300 + 800 = 3500 Total credits = 20 + 20 + 10 = 50 GPA / Weighted Average = 3500 ÷ 50 = 70

In this example, the student's weighted average is 70.

Why credits matter

Credits matter because not all modules carry the same weight. A 20-credit module has more influence on your GPA than a 10-credit module. That is why weighted averages are more accurate than simply averaging all grades equally.
